A smooth transition is mostly preparation. This general timeline shows the phases most advisors go through. Your contracts and situation may require a different order, so confirm the specifics with counsel.
Phase 1: Quiet research (months before)
- Clarify why you'd move and what must not change.
- Know your approximate numbers: AUM, T12, revenue mix and client concentration.
- Locate and review your employment agreement, deferred comp schedules and any notes.
- Check your own BrokerCheck record.
Phase 2: Confidential exploration
- Talk with a recruiter about firm models that fit.
- Meet a shortlist of firms, with no names shared until you agree.
- Compare offers side by side using the same assumptions.
Use the readiness checklist to see what you still need to prepare.
Phase 3: Decision and preparation
- Have an attorney review the offer and your current obligations.
- Plan timing around bonus and vesting dates.
- Ask the new firm how they support onboarding: technology, account transfers and staff.
Phase 4: The move and the first 90 days
- Follow the resignation and client-communication process your attorney and new firm advise, including any protocol requirements.
- Prioritize your client communication plan.
- Track account transfers and follow up quickly on paperwork.
