What is the difference between a wirehouse and an independent broker-dealer?
Wirehouse advisors are employees (W-2) of a large national firm that provides brand, support and technology, usually in exchange for a lower payout. Independent broker-dealer advisors are generally independent contractors (1099) who run their own business, keep a higher payout and pay more of their own expenses.
What is an RIA?
A registered investment adviser (RIA) is a firm registered with the SEC or state regulators to give investment advice, usually for a fee, and is held to a fiduciary standard. Advisors can join an existing RIA or launch their own.
What is a hybrid RIA?
A hybrid advisor runs fee-based business through an RIA while keeping a broker-dealer affiliation for commission-based products. It suits advisors with a mix of fee and commission revenue.
Which firm model pays advisors the most?
Independent and RIA models usually offer the highest payout percentage, but you take on more costs. Employee models pay a lower percentage but cover overhead and often offer larger transition packages. Compare take-home pay, not just payout, with our payout tool.
